India AI is currently inviting applications for the position of Director – IndiaAI Safety Institute purely on Contract/ Consolidated basis.

Last date of Application: 02.06.2026

The place of posting shall be in New Delhi but transferable to project locations of IndiaAI as per existing policy of IndiaAI.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide overall strategic direction, leadership and oversight for the IndiaAI Safety Institute, including finalisation of its scope of work.
• Lead and operationalize the Institute’s Hub and Spoke model by establishing and managing structured partnerships with academia, startups, industry, civil society and relevant government ministries and departments.
• Direct the development of technical tools, guidelines, frameworks, commitments and standards for AI safety that are contextualized to India’s unique challenges and opportunities, including the needs of the developing world.
• Oversee design and execution of AI model evaluation, red-teaming and risk assessment programmes to assess the safety, security and trustworthiness of AI systems developed and deployed in India.
• Commission and guide indigenous research on AI safety, with a focus on approaches relevant to India’s social, economic, cultural, and linguistic contexts.
• Facilitate coordination across all pillars of the IndiaAI Mission to integrate safety and trust considerations into computing, models, data, innovation, and skilling programmes.
• Represent IndiaAI Safety Institute at national and international forums, conferences and multilateral engagements.
• Build institutional capacity by recruiting, mentoring and developing a high-quality multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and policy specialists under the Institute.
• Monitor progress against approved milestones and deliverables, and place issues, risks or deviations before the competent authority for appropriate action.
• Monitor emerging AI safety risks and developments globally and provide timely advisories and strategic recommendations to the Competent Authority(s).
• Review implementation processes from time to time and suggest improvements based on experience and programme requirements.
• Submit periodic reports, programme updates and strategic inputs to senior leadership and oversight bodies.
