“Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronic & IT”, with the approval of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, was initiated in 2014 with an objective to enhance the number of PhDs in the country (Budget: Rs. 466 Cr.). PhD seats were allocated to institutions (IITs, NITs, Central & State Universities etc.) in 25 states and 4 Union Territories. Some of the achievements of the scheme are as follows-
- PhD Completion: 773 Full Time & 170 Part Time
- Thesis submission: 51 Full Time & 7 Part Time
- Currently Pursuing: 63 Full Time & 99 Part Time
- Research Publications: 5750
- Patents filed: 90
Phase-II of the scheme was launched with a budget of Rs. 481.93 Crs for 9 years targeting:
- 1000 Full Time PhD Candidates
- 150 Part Time PhD Candidates.
- 50 awardees of “Young Faculty Research Fellowship”.
- 225 awardees of “Post-Doctoral Fellowship”.
- Enhancement in number of PhD in ESDM, IT/ITES
- Full Time PhD candidates will receive monthly fellowship along with RoR through DBT
- Selected 250 Full Time candidates will get support for 6 months visit to Labs Abroad.
- Support of Research Contingency Grant for each Full Time PhD candidate @ Rs. 1.20 Lakhs/year/candidate
- 1000 Full Time seats have been allocated to 155 institutions
- 153 Part Time seats have been allocated to 112 institutions
- 527 Full Time candidates are Currently Pursuing
- 47 Part Time candidates are Currently Pursuing
- One workshop for review of research work of PhD scholars was held at IIT Mandi in Sep 2024
- 11 YFRF awardees have been selected.
- 114 Institutions have submitted proposals requesting 1214 PDF seats, allocations are under process

Special Features

Full Time PhD candidates will receive monthly fellowship along with Reimbursement of Rent through DBT
Selected 250 Full Time candidates will get support for 6 months visit to Labs Abroad.
Support of Research Contingency Grant for each Full Time PhD candidate @ Rs. 1.20 Lakhs/year/candidate.
